The Andaman Islands in India were greatly affected by the tsunami in January 2005, but they received very little attention in rebuilding work. In collaboration with SEEDS, an Indian non-profit working toward "sustainable and safe habitats," ESW Stanford set out to implement a rainwater harvesting system to combat the lack of access to safe drinking water on Little Andaman (also known as Hutbay). Through discussions with local residents, however, the ESW Stanford team realized that a larger problem for them was the lack of proper sanitation facilities. As this was the most pressing need that the community had articulated, ESW Stanford then began work on implementing a safe and sustainable sanitation system.
